New Chair Will Focus on Increasing Transparency, Investor Understanding and
Fostering Best Practices
Toronto ON – September 9, 2009 ― Alternative Investment Management Association -
Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Ostoich as Chair. He
succeeds Phil Schmitt who is stepping down after serving as Chair for the past
three years.
“I look forward to furthering the work of AIMA Canada in fostering transparency,
investor education, and best practices throughout the Canadian industry,” said
Mr. Ostoich.
Mr. Ostoich acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor Phil Schmitt: “I
would like to recognize and thank Phil Schmitt for the important role he has
played over the last three years in representing our industry and developing
AIMA Canada to its present level,” he said.
Gary Ostoich is President of Spartan Fund Management which manages a
multi-strategy hedge fund based in Toronto. He has been a prominent figure in
the Canadian Hedge Fund industry for many years, having become involved as a
lawyer in the early 1990’s when the Canadian alternatives market was in its
infancy. He has been associated with AIMA Canada since it was established in
2003 and played an integral role in its founding as one of the organization’s
initial Executive Committee members.
Over the years, Mr. Ostoich has spoken at numerous conferences both in Canada
and abroad on a wide range of topics affecting hedge funds. He has also worked
with various securities regulators across Canada with respect to the
alternatives industry, including appearing before the Senate Banking Committee
to testify with respect to hedge fund regulation.
He formerly served as a Partner with the Toronto law firm McMillan LLP and as a
senior hedge fund executive.
