The Group of 20 leading economies have agreed that hedge funds have to register and supply information, a delegation source said Saturday.
The official, who declined to be named, said that will be part of the G20 communique to be issued later.
Some European countries have called for a registration rule for hedge funds combined with the collection of structural data to obtain a better insight into the hedge fund industry and its potential for systemic risk.
Germany and France said earlier this week appropriate regulation of all hedge funds and private capital pools, which might pose a systemic risk, should be regulated and supervised. The U.S. and the U.K. in the past had been cautious about tougher regulation of hedge funds.
